“We cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails.” ~ Dolly Parton

Certainly this past year has been a test of our adaptability and emotional resilience. Now a year into the Covid 19 pandemic and the resulting shut downs / shelter in place orders, many people report finding it difficult to be resilient and maintain hopefulness. Over 30 percent of Americans are reporting spikes in anxiety, insomnia, depression, rage, addiction, domestic violence, and other mental health issues.

It has all been just too much and it is normal to feel overwhelmed and a bit out of sorts. There has been too much separation from others, too much loss, too much grief.  Too much fear and uncertainty, too much information and misinformation. Way too much social media. Way too much news coverage and politics. Quite simply it is all emotionally overwhelming.

What to expect when experiencing deep protracted stress ….anxiety, irritability, depression, anger, sleeplessness, fatigue, aches & pains, overeating, over drinking and other self soothing habits. Difficulty with concentration and focus. Increased conflict in interpersonal relationships, a lack of patience and a short fuse is a recipe for discord.

What can you do to feel better?

Treat your body as if it were your friend, give it plenty of water and healthy foods.  Go for a walk in nature, breathe in the fresh air, practice mindfulness. Disconnect from endless screen time, doom scrolling  and media influence, none of it really makes you feel good anyway.  Although these are simple actions they can be very helpful for reducing stress, anxiety, depression and insomnia.

MOST IMPORTANTLY :   Reach out.   Help is available, many people  are pleasantly surprised to find they enjoy therapy sessions via phone or online and most therapists are back in the office for in person meetings.
